Making Room for 2017

Every year we make resolutions to make more time for family, business, and ourselves.  Each year we promise we will get more organized in the new year.  This is why January is National Get Organized Month.

Happily, I am ahead of the game.  For the first time, I took all Christmas decorations down within days of Christmas.  Yesterday, I created my 2017 file folders.  That never takes too long, but in the past I have always procrastinated until well after first of the year.

It is amazing how much better I feel; prepared for a successful 2017!  It really is true, getting rid of excess makes room for future.  Not just in physical space, but in your mind as well.  The tree is down, and makes my home seem bigger.  Files for 2016 are boxed and ready for storage and new files ready for action.

Next week is busy with clients, but I am ready for busy year and look forward to more time for myself. If you are ready for a change in 2017, don’t wait.  Start meeting your goals today.

The Need to Organize for SNOW

Snow 4Snow is beautiful, but this week the east coast was reminded how treacherous the weather can be. Knoxville was lucky and missed the blizzard this time.  If you are not prepared, spend some time NOW and get organized for the next weather wave.

Organize the Car:

Have small bag stocked with blanket, extra shoes, flashlight, and snacks.

Organize the Pantry:

This is one area that should always be organized.  Clear out-of-date foods, and buy only what you like and have room for.  Don’t let “bulk” buying clutter your space.

Create an Emergency Supply Area:

Have dedicated space for emergency supplies.  Light bulbs, batteries, flash lights, radio, and phone chargers.  Even have games ready should kids be without cable tv.

Organize Toiletries & Linens:

Have blankets and towels clean and organized.  Stock toiletries and first aid supplies.  You never know when the neighbors heat may go out and you have company.

If your storage is limited and you need ideas for create organizing solutions, contact Closets by McKenry for custom closet design.  Be ready, and the next blizzard the only thing on the floor will be family gathering around the fire.

Easier to Clear Clutter
Thanks to Waste Management

Have you been putting off getting an organizing project started because you did not want a large metal unit for the recycled waste in the front?  Waste Management has a new service called Bagster – Dumpster in a Bag.

You purchase a large bag at your local home improvement store that holds up to 3,300 pounds of unwanted, unusable clutter and waste.  Then schedule collection pickup on online or call for a time.

To see if the service is available in your area, click here.  This will work for small renovation projects as well.  The first and most difficult step in the organizing process is clearing out the excess, making hard decisions about things that are now clutter but seem to say in the way.  Looks like Waste Management is making the job a little easier.

Are You Ready for the Purge?
Clear Clutter with a Professional Organizer

While the movie may be scary, real life purging doesn’t have to be. Letting “go” is the first and most important step in getting and staying organized. In the movie it happens once a year. An annual edit around the home and office is a great idea.
Ask yourself hard questions, and don’t be afraid to let go. You have permission to let things go that are no longer used. Donating your clutter will allow those “black hole” items to go to others who could use them.
So July 18th, celebrate The Purge and free your space for the future.
If you are not sure how to Purge, we have organizers ready to help.

Finding New Uses for Storage

An antique pie safe, a family heirloom, once cooled great-grandma's pies.

Urban small spaces and even suburban larger homes, often need to find unique storage solutions. At this vacation condo, we kept family history and give it new life. With no room for more cabinets or china display, we used this unique pie safe that was used by client’s great grandmother as early at 1890 to cool delicious deserts. Seems only natural that a piece of furniture that once kept foods the family devoured, now holds the most treasured china that is used for special occasions.

Think outside the box for your storage needs.

Organize Home Manuals

Binder 1 FPEvery home comes with lots of papers and even manuals. The new Blender, Range, Air Conditioner, and the list goes on. With almost every major purchase in your home comes a manual.

Binder 2 FPWhen we work with clients we create a Home Manual Binder. Using sleeves with pockets and tabs, we organize by areas of the home. In the front of the binder service providers are kept for easy reference.

BINDER 3 FPKeep your binder in your home office or possibly utility room. Where ever you have the room and it is easy to find when the reference manual is needed. And as for karma, when you move the new home owners will really appreciate the binder you hand over to them!

Elegant Custom Closets Designed for Any Size

Reach In Closet

Reach In Closet

Your wardrobe can still be in a beautiful space even if there is not as much room as a walk-in closet. When I design a closet I like to take into consideration the other cabinetry in the room or nearby area. In this condo, we matched the existing finishes in the Master Bath and this reach in closet is custom designed to get the shoes off the floor. The shelves hold 30 pair of shoes, hats bedding and towels for the adjoining bath. By double hanging the “short hang items” there is as much room as if we kept a single rod in the closet and still had room for 30″ of long hang items. And there is still room for a laundry hamper for worn clothes. Notice the difference using the same hangers makes for the overall look of the space.

Wardrobe Walk-in Luxury

If there is room for converting an extra room house your wardrobe the possibilities are endless for your custom designed closet. Center islands hold personal folded garments and framed glass doors could showcase purses or sweaters.
Shelves for shoes...

With room, shoes can be organized by heel size, color, and type of wear. Islands are also a great place to “hide” hampers and give a place for personal decorative items.

Don’t you deserve luxury? And I didn’t even mention how much easier your day starts with an organized wardrobe! We can also provide you with an environmentally friendly closet made from “green” materials.

Changing Hangers and Dry Cleaners – Making Closets Stylish and Green

Since organizing my first closet, I have always encouraged using uniform hangers. Using the same style of hanger allows your wardrobe to hang at the same height.  Once clothes are sorted by “like with like” it is much easier to find the outfit you need each morning.

But you may be reluctant to make the hanger change because you do not want to have to re-hang the clean clothes upon returning from the cleaners.  Ask if they would use your hangers instead of the wire ones.  More and more I like to use the Huggable Hangers from Joy Mangano.  They are super thin, attractive, and the flocking keeps items from slipping off the hanger.

Many dry cleaners would be happy to save the cost of wire hangers and the ultra thin ones are easy for them to use.  Just offer to take the same amount of hangers into your cleaners with your dirty clothes.  If your dry cleaner is not able to accomodate, then try to return the wire hangers as you re-hang your clothes.  This will allow them to recycle, which is always a good thing to do.

Remember, it is Get Organized Month.  So see where clutter is keeping you from getting organized and tackle it one project at a time.

Is Your Closet Green?

Environmentally friendly materials are now available for your Get It Together LA! storage system for closets, garages, and home offices.  Recognizing the demand from consumers for “green-build products” we are offering the SkyBlend™ line from Roseburg.

The line is SCS and EPP certified 100% pre-consumer recycled week fiber particleboard that has no Urea Formaldehyde added during the manufacturing process.  Third party testing verifies SkyBlend™ formaldehyde emissions (.00-.01 ppm) are no greater than levels occurring in outdoor ambient air conditions according to the manufacturer.

Roseburg is North America’s largest, fully integrated manufacturer of melamine andspecialty panels with lands and facilites in California, Georgia, Mississippi, Oregon and South Carolina.  Ask for “green” when you build your next closet.

Green Tip:  Remember to return your hangers to the dry cleaner for reuse.  Ask for your clean clothes to be placed in reuseable bags from your dry cleaner and cut out the plastic.
