Making Room for 2017

Every year we make resolutions to make more time for family, business, and ourselves.  Each year we promise we will get more organized in the new year.  This is why January is National Get Organized Month.

Happily, I am ahead of the game.  For the first time, I took all Christmas decorations down within days of Christmas.  Yesterday, I created my 2017 file folders.  That never takes too long, but in the past I have always procrastinated until well after first of the year.

It is amazing how much better I feel; prepared for a successful 2017!  It really is true, getting rid of excess makes room for future.  Not just in physical space, but in your mind as well.  The tree is down, and makes my home seem bigger.  Files for 2016 are boxed and ready for storage and new files ready for action.

Next week is busy with clients, but I am ready for busy year and look forward to more time for myself. If you are ready for a change in 2017, don’t wait.  Start meeting your goals today.

Moving Manager Organizes All the Details

Recently Get It Together LA! moved a client into a Hancock Park condo. All details including hiring the moving company, designing new closets, coordinating painting and electrical additions with vendors helped the client stay focused on his work while knowing the move would happen smoothly.
First, editing the old residence with the client allowed both items long lost to be found and items no longer needed to be edited in an efficient manner. Then we pack belongings and set up a plan for the move day.
Closet design by award winning designer and Principal Chris McKenry matched materials with the existing cabinetry in the kitchen and baths. We proved having the right Moving Manager will help elevate the stress of the project. Our closets allowed new storage for a pantry, home office and wardrobes. We also added lights to the closets; organzied doesn’t help if you can see your Prada!
We designed a buffet for china, crystal and bar storage to match the new dining room table. And after two days the home was not only unpacked but organzied to reflect the clients’ lifestyle. Think how nice it would be to move and come home to the bed turned down.
Yes, a good moving manager handles every detail!

Making a Luxurious Master Closet

Often a new space is recreated by making modifications to existing structures.  This project is a prime example of how to make an elegant home for your wardrobe without having to start from scratch.  The master closet was redesigned by Chris McKenry and organized by our Get It Together LA! team.

An obtrusive full length tailor’s mirror was removed from the island allowing the feeling of more space.  Then, the white-painted surface of the island was replaced with a stained Burch top to match the woodwork in the adjoining hall.

More hanging space was created on the back wall and a lovely framed glass cabinet was added for extra storage and display.  The existing handbag cabinet was updated with the same matching framed glass doors giving a beautiful display of PradaRodoSt. John’s,Tod’s and Louis Vuitton evening and handbags.

And there is never enough room for designer footwear.  Not true now.  We made room for Micheal KorsMoschinoOscar de la Renta and Salvatore Ferragmo by adding shelves perpendicular to the existing shoe display.

The chandelier and wall coverings were by Preston Lee Design.  Now this dressing room has form, function and finesse.  Organizing does just make life easy, it makes it spectacular.

Changing Hangers and Dry Cleaners – Making Closets Stylish and Green

Since organizing my first closet, I have always encouraged using uniform hangers. Using the same style of hanger allows your wardrobe to hang at the same height.  Once clothes are sorted by “like with like” it is much easier to find the outfit you need each morning.

But you may be reluctant to make the hanger change because you do not want to have to re-hang the clean clothes upon returning from the cleaners.  Ask if they would use your hangers instead of the wire ones.  More and more I like to use the Huggable Hangers from Joy Mangano.  They are super thin, attractive, and the flocking keeps items from slipping off the hanger.

Many dry cleaners would be happy to save the cost of wire hangers and the ultra thin ones are easy for them to use.  Just offer to take the same amount of hangers into your cleaners with your dirty clothes.  If your dry cleaner is not able to accomodate, then try to return the wire hangers as you re-hang your clothes.  This will allow them to recycle, which is always a good thing to do.

Remember, it is Get Organized Month.  So see where clutter is keeping you from getting organized and tackle it one project at a time.

A Home Office Closet

Neat and Tidy Reach in Closet

A reach in closet will have more room if all the wall space is utilized.  Home office closets may have several uses.  Extra coats, office supplies, family photographs, and shredder just don’t work in a closet with one rod and shelf.

Once you identify your needs, a good closet designer and make your “prime real estate” work for you.  Cubbies for paper supplies, adjustable shelves get things in sight.  If over-sized times are stored, have a “home” designed for easy access.  For example, extra table leafs for the dining room table are now easy to reach.

Even if your system is melamine, choose a finish you like.  There are many options other than white.  Fun containers, like these form The Container Store,  will finish off your project and make working at home more fun and productive.
