The Need to Organize for SNOW

Snow 4Snow is beautiful, but this week the east coast was reminded how treacherous the weather can be. Knoxville was lucky and missed the blizzard this time.  If you are not prepared, spend some time NOW and get organized for the next weather wave.

Organize the Car:

Have small bag stocked with blanket, extra shoes, flashlight, and snacks.

Organize the Pantry:

This is one area that should always be organized.  Clear out-of-date foods, and buy only what you like and have room for.  Don’t let “bulk” buying clutter your space.

Create an Emergency Supply Area:

Have dedicated space for emergency supplies.  Light bulbs, batteries, flash lights, radio, and phone chargers.  Even have games ready should kids be without cable tv.

Organize Toiletries & Linens:

Have blankets and towels clean and organized.  Stock toiletries and first aid supplies.  You never know when the neighbors heat may go out and you have company.

If your storage is limited and you need ideas for create organizing solutions, contact Closets by McKenry for custom closet design.  Be ready, and the next blizzard the only thing on the floor will be family gathering around the fire.

Tailgating Starts in a Organized Home

Football season is here (what happened to the summer?)!  That means fans from Neyland Stadium to the Rose Bowl are ready for Tailgate Parties.  Menus need planning,  supplies will be bought, but is your home field organized?

Here are some simple tips for successful Tailgating season:

1.  Team effort – get family involved and delegate tasks.
2.  Home field advantage – clean out and organized the refrigerator and pantry.

3.  The field house (garage) – have space in garage to keep dry goods stored for each weeks game – paper goods, coolers, folding chairs, etc.

4.  The pre-game Stadium (your car) – get that trunk cleared out and find containers that can go from garage to trunk for quick set-ups.

With just a little planning the Vols will not be the only ones running through the “T” this tailgating season.

Limited Kitchen Storage Increased by Professional Organizer

This galley kitchen works better than most would think considering its size. More storage was created in this home when we designed a unique bar/buffet. Holding stemware, china, liquor the buffet features silent closing drawers, bottom drawer designed for bottles, and lower convenient pull out shelf. The finish matches the dining table.

We Like the Spice House

Well Organized family kitchen

A chef can not create delicious meals without the finest spices.  When we organized family kitchens, one of the first things we want within reach are spices and our favorite supplier is The Spice House.

The Spice House's Inventory

Spices should be replaced every year.  If it is time for to update your supplies check out The Spice House.  You don’t have to live in Chicago to take advantage of these “hand-selected and hand-prepared spices and herbs”…order from the website or call them at 847-328-3711.

Spices are best kept near the range, keeping ingredients convenient while cooking.  Should you only want to order these beautiful uniform spice jars that is possible.  However, their spice prices are very reasonable and time will be saved in labeling and refilling these containers when you include ordering the spices too.

Spices on "Stadium Raisers"

If spices are kept on “stadium raisers” in your cabinet, when ordering ask The Spice House to place the labels on the top of the jars.  Otherwise you might not be able to see the spice needed.  And sometimes a free drawer is just the right spot for keeping spices handy.

Weekend Makeover by the McKenry Team

In two days, two organizers gave this vacation home new life.  On a recent project we performed a 24 hour organizing blitz through a four bedroom vacation retreat.

Clothes in the master closet were sorted, hung on uniform hangers, and shoulder covers were added to coats.  This protects the shoulders from dust while making it easy to see the garments.

In the pantry, the room was emptied and we started from scratch.  Checking dates and discarding items no longer used.  Cleaning supplies were moved to the garage making more room for food storage.  Clear air tight containers dressed up the space while helping to keep foods fresh.
Guest suite baths were enhanced with acrylic drawer inserts.  Travel items were stocked giving a welcoming treat for visitors to enjoy.  Wicker type container were added under the vanities for paper supplies.
On your next vacation or weekend get away, think of the extra time you will have when your home has everything in place.

Social Media is Now Sharing Recipes

evergreen 1

Social Networking

Thanksgiving is around the corner.  It is time to think about what tasty recipes will be served to family and friends.  Thanks to a client I discovered that social networking is now in the kitchen and making this process so easy.

If you have mastered Facebook and love to cook you have to check out www.KeyIngredient.com.  Registration is free and you can organize your recipes for private use, share with only family and friends, or open up to the world-wide web.  It only takes a minute to register and then start entering your favorite meals.

The program even creates shopping lists from the recipes you plan to cook.  When you search for recipes others have shared, there is even a place for comments to be posted that could save the trouble of cooking a mediocre recipe.

While this program is free, a Digital Recipe Reader  is available from Neiman Marcus.  This hand-held device will keep your kitchen green and truly make your recipes paperless.   Of course if you have a computer in the kitchen; even better.

Check this out and when your guests leave and ask for the recipe, just share your Key Ingredient screen name.

Pantry Planning for the Culinary Hobbyist

What do you desire for your new pantry?

  • food storage
  • an oasis to enhance your culinary skills
  • a place for extra cooking utensils

This project was designed as an old fashion, yet elegant, pantry.  In consulting with the interior designer wicker baskets, once used for vegetable storage, are now used for bagged chips and snacks.  The wrap around pantry features glass inserted into wood shelves which give more light.  One lower corner features a rotating Lazy Suzan for easy access to the rear.

Organize food by categories.  Modular POP Canisters from The Container Store keep baking items and pastas fresh and make it easy to see when supplies are low.  Quattro Stagioni Jars  provide the “old fashion” look for nuts, candies, and beans.

Your pantry can have a complete new look by cleaning out all unused and out of date food.  Keep most needed items at eye level.  New containers will not only provide a “fresh” look, but keep foods fresh for your family.

Bon Appetit
